Dear Covid Bride,
It’s not fair – that is my opening statement.
We all thought that this would be over by now and life would return to normal. Unfortunately not. The good news is that you are NOT alone! I know this should be one of the happiest, most magical times of your lives and instead it’s filled with confusion, sadness and uncertainty. Maintaining perspective is so hard when you feel so heartbroken.
After all is said and done, you are still left asking: ‘What do we do now?’ So, after ten Covid weddings, numerous date changes and cancellations and lots of tears ( yours and mine), here are my two pieces of advice.
- You are entitled to a pity party!
Absolutely! You are entitled to have a full on pity party with that ugly cry: tears, running nose and all. Wine is absolutely encouraged and endorsed.
2. When you are ready… remember perspective
When you are ready, wipe the tears away and try a new perspective. The events of 2020 have forced us to look at things differently. To focus on what really matters, on what is really important. We were forced to slow down and savour each moment with the people we love.
I am writing this letter not because I have all the answers; but simply to let you know that you are not alone. Despite everything going on you are allowed to have a temper tantrum like that of my toddler two year old daughter. You are dealing with a lot.
I am writing this to tell you that at some point you will marry the love of your life and we will celebrate your love no matter what. So until we are able to, don’t give up on your special day. Hold your partner’s hand a little tighter, make every kiss count and truly love them. Let us acknowledge that the card we’ve been dealt is unfair, but we are so blessed to have someone to love and spend the rest of our lives with.
Remember, perspective is the way through this.
